The round of 16 is complete, and it has produced the most stripped-back last eight in memory: all three host nations — the United States, Canada and Mexico — are out, and so are five-time champions Brazil. The eight sides left standing are France, Morocco, Spain, Belgium, Norway, England, Argentina and Switzerland. Below is every result, the eliminations that reshaped the bracket, and the confirmed quarter-final draw with New Zealand kick-off times.

The Story of the Round: Norway Stun Brazil

The defining result was in Boston on 5 July, where Norway beat Brazil 2-1 — a brace from Erling Haaland ending the tournament for the five-time champions and completing Norway’s first run to a World Cup quarter-final in their history (and a first World Cup appearance since 1998). It is the biggest scalp of the knockout stage so far and the clearest sign of how open the bottom half of the draw has become.

Norway’s 2-1 win over Brazil is the upset of the knockout stage: a Haaland double eliminated the five-time champions and carried Norway into the first quarter-final in their history.

Hosts Out, Iberia Split, Switzerland Hold Their Nerve

Belgium’s 4-1 dismissal of the United States removed the last host nation, after Canada (3-0 to Morocco) and Mexico (3-2 to England) had already fallen. The all-Iberian tie went to Spain, who edged Portugal 1-0 to stretch their record to just two goals conceded all tournament. Argentina survived the round’s other classic, coming through 3-2 against Egypt — a result Egypt have since formally protested to FIFA. Switzerland provided the only shootout, holding Colombia to 0-0 before goalkeeper Gregor Kobel helped settle it 4-3 from the spot to reach a first quarter-final in 72 years.
