The Case For England

England have the best joint-attacking duo at the tournament: Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, both on six goals. Tuchel said it himself: "If we are talking about a formula, it’s pretty simple: Put Harry and Jude together, they will do the rest." (Yahoo Sports, 13 Jul.) Behind them, the form has been a pattern of "capable performance followed by a slog" (NZ Herald) — strong half-hour spells against Croatia, Panama and Mexico bracketed by laboured passages against Ghana, DR Congo and Norway. The defence is the worry. Jarell Quansah is suspended — his second match of a two-match ban after the red against Mexico in the R16. The supporting cast has also stepped up: Álvarez, Mac Allister, De Paul, Paredes, Fernández — the spine that won 2022 — all available.

The watch-out is the extra-time tax. Argentina have needed extra time in two of their last three knockout games (QF Switzerland went to extra time; their legs are heavy). Argentina are also a top-four nation by FIFA ranking and the only one of the four with a Qatar-2022 final pedigree.
