Mbappé drew level in the current Golden Boot race with his quarter-final strike against Morocco; Messi has scored or assisted in every knockout game.
Why Mbappé Is Favourite
Three reasons. First, the assists tiebreak. FIFA’s Golden Boot tiebreak is goals, then assists, then minutes played — and Mbappé leads it 3 to 2. Bellingham is the line to watch. The same bookmaker has quoted him at 26.00 (13 Jul) and 14.00 (14 Jul) — a price that has roughly halved in a day, on the back of his extra-time brace against Norway in the quarter-final. Take the shorter number as the live one and the longer number as the measure of how fast this market is moving. Mbappé’s own price spans 1.71–2.10 depending on when you look; he is the favourite on every reading.
Storyline Subplot: The All-Time Record
Messi leads the all-time World Cup goals list on 21, with Mbappé on 20. If Mbappé scores in the semi-final or the final and Messi does not, the record changes hands mid-tournament — at 27, with two more World Cups plausibly ahead of him, against a 39-year-old playing what is likely his last.
